Projects

How company projects work in the GraphLab Portal — license pools, groups, and devices.

What is a project?

A project is a workspace inside your company account. It is where you:

  • Reserve a slice of your device license pool (how many devices may run under this project).
  • Organize hardware groups (same chip + screen + boot defaults).
  • Track which devices belong to which product line or deployment.

Think: one project per product, factory line, or customer rollout — not one project per physical board.

Project vs group vs device

Level Role Example
Project License budget + container for groups Smart Oven UI 2026
Group Shared hardware recipe (platform, display, boot config) 7" LVDS panels
Device One registered board (UUID + license) oven-display-042

Devices always live in a group. Groups always live in a project. See Groups for the next level down.

Project environment (Development vs Production)

When you create a project, you choose an environment: Development or Production. This controls which company resources the project may use. The choice maps to a fixed device license product:

Environment Device license product Platform / display / boot firmware
Development GraphLab Boot - Development only (evaluation tier) Evaluation or commercial — you may use commercial platform, display, and boot configs while keeping devices on development slots
Production GraphLab Boot only (commercial tier) Commercial only — platform, display, and boot firmware must match production licenses
  • Device licenses in your company pool are separate products (request each in Shop).
  • A project may only consume device license slots that match its environment.
  • All groups and devices under the project inherit the same device license product for provisioning.
  • Device license pools do not expire once granted; platform evaluation licenses still expire on their own schedule.

Project license allocation

Company device licenses sit in a shared pool (request slots in Shop; view inventory under Licenses). Before you can register devices, you assign slots to the project:

  1. Open Projects → click the project name.
  2. On Project Overview, find Project license allocation.
  3. Pick a company license that matches the project environment (GraphLab Boot or GraphLab Boot - Development).
  4. Set Allocated device slots — e.g. 10 means up to ten devices can be registered in this project at once. The form shows how many slots are available in the company pool for this project.
  5. Click Save allocation.

The overview shows:

  • Allocated — slots you assigned to this project.
  • Consumed by devices — slots already used by registered devices.

Registering a device uses one slot immediately, even before you provision the license file. If allocation is missing or full, device registration is blocked.

Evaluation workspace (onboarding)

New companies get an evaluation workspace automatically during onboarding. It is a Development project (GraphLab Boot - Development) and is marked Evaluation workspace on the project list. Its name can be renamed after onboarding is complete. You may delete it like any other project once all devices are removed.

It works like any other development project: allocate development device slots, create groups, and register devices. You can rename or delete the evaluation workspace after onboarding (remove devices first). Use separate Production projects when you are ready to ship with GraphLab Boot commercial device licenses.

Creating a project

  1. Go to Projects → New project.
  2. Enter Name and optional Description.
  3. Choose Project environment — Development or Production (see table above).
  4. Click Save.
  5. On the project overview, complete license allocation (above).
  6. Create at least one hardware group before adding devices.

Editing and deleting

  • Edit project — change name, description, or environment. Changing environment may require a different company license allocation. The onboarding evaluation workspace environment is locked to Development.
  • Delete project — removes the project and its groups when no devices remain. The evaluation workspace can be deleted like any other project once devices are removed.

Typical workflow

  1. Order and activate platform and display licenses in Shop.
  2. Request device license slots in Shop (GraphLab Boot and/or GraphLab Boot - Development).
  3. Create or open a project and set license allocation.
  4. Create groups inside the project (Groups).
  5. Register devices into a group and provision licenses. See Devices.

Troubleshooting

Issue What to check
No company license in dropdown Request the matching product in Shop (GraphLab Boot for production projects, GraphLab Boot - Development for development projects). Check Unassigned slots on the Licenses page.
Not enough slots / allocation fails All pool slots may be assigned to other projects — reduce another project’s allocation or request more slots in Shop
Cannot register devices Allocation is zero, full, or not saved
Groups show “Not configured” Edit the group — set platform and display (active licenses required)
Wrong device license on provision Project environment must match the company device license you allocated (development vs production)
Commercial hardware rejected in production project Production projects require commercial platform and display licenses on each group
